Comment répondre au téléphone en anglais ?

Si vous travaillez dans une entreprise internationale, ou que vous avez besoin de confirmer une réservation d’hotel ou de voiture, vous aurez besoin de ces expressions courantes pour appeler au téléphone.

Taking a call (répondre au téléphone)

Answering the phone  (répondre au téléphone)

  • Good morning. (Institution). Can l help you?  
  • (Institution), (first + family name) speaking. What can l do for you?  
  • Yes, speaking.  

Asking the caller’s name  (demander le nom de l’interlocuteur)

  • Who’s calling, please?  
  • Could l have your name, please?  
  • May l have your name, please?  

Asking the caller’s concern (demander ce que la personne veut)

  • How can I help you?  
  • What can I do for you?  
  • Whom would you like to speak to?

Asking someone to wait  (demander à la personne d’attendre)

  • Wait a moment, please. I’m putting you through.  
  • Hold the line, please. I’ll connect you.  
  • I’ll find out. /I’ll check.
  • I’ll try again.  
  • One moment, please.  

When a connection isn’t possible  (quand la liaison n’est pas possible)

  • I’m sorry. … isn’t available at the moment/is on another line.  
  • Could you call back later?
  • I’m afraid the line is busy at the moment.  
  • Shall l ask … to call you back?  
  • You can reach … on another number / on his/her mobile.

       

Taking a message  (prendre un message)

  • Would you like to leave a message?
  • Can l give … a message?  
  • I’ll tell … as soon as … gets back

Checking information  (vérifier une information)

  • Could you spell that for me, please?  
  • Could you repeat it/say that again, please?  
  • Can l read this back to you?  
  • What’s your number, please?  
  • Sorry, l didn’t catch that. (This is a bad line.)

Finishing the phone call  (terminer l’appel)

  • Thank you for calling.  
  • I’ll get back to you next week.
  • I’ll call you back later.  
  • Bye for now, looking forward to seeing you.

Making a call  (passer un appel)

Introducing oneself  (se présenter)

  • Hello. This is (first + family name) speaking.  
  • Good morning, this is (first + family name) from (institution).
  • Is that (name +/ institution)?  

Asking to speak to someone (demander à parler à qqun)

  • I’d like to speak to …, please.  
  • Could l speak to …, please?  
  • Could you put me through to …, please?  

Giving a reason for the call (donner la raison de son appel)

  • I’m calling about …  
  • I’m returning (name’s) call.
  • I’m just calling to let you know that … /to ask about …  
  • Mr./Ms. (Name) asked me to call back.

Leaving a message  (laisser un message)

  • Can/May l leave … a message?  
  • Could you give … a message?  
  • Could/Would you ask … to call me back this afternoon?
  • Could you tell … that I/… called?

Checking information  (vérifier une information)

  • What time did you say … ‘ll be back?  
  • Did you say … won’t be back till … ?  
  • Could you speak more slowly, please?  
  • Could you speak up a bit, please?

Finishing the phone call (terminer l’appel)

  • It’s been nice talking to you.
