Je vous en propose 20 des plus couramment utilisées dans cet article. Je vous les ai même classé par niveau pour que vous n’appreniez que celle que vous seriez en mesure d’utiliser en fonction de votre niveau d’anglais !

Expressions simples à connaître niveau débutant 

1.More or less

Synonyme : Mostly/ approximately/ almost
En français : plus ou moins 

Exemple : There are more or less a hundred people at the meeting yesterday.

2.Sooner or later

Synonyme  : Eventually.
En français : tôt ou tard 

Exemple : He’ll show up sooner or later.

3.Step by step

En français : pas à pas, étape par étape 

Exemple : don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it seems. I’ll show you the process step by step.

4.Little by little

En français : petit à petit 

Exemple : I’m currently learning English and I’m improving little by little. 

5.Do’s and don’ts

En français : les choses à faire et à ne pas faire 

Exemple . My manager is so experienced, she shared all the do’s and don’t of a job interview with me.

6.Pros and cons

Synonyme : The advantages and disadvantages, the drawbacks and positive things. 
En français : les pour, les contre 

Exemple. We need to look at the pros and cons of each alternative before we make a decision.

Des expressions simples Niveau intermediaire  

7.Back and forth

Definition : from one place to another and back again.
En français : va et vient, faire la navette, aller retour. 

Example : now that my children go to school I feel that I’m driving back and forth to school all day! 

8. Loud and clear

En français : haut et fort, distinctement , parfaitement

Exemple : I’m sure she got the message loud and clear.

9.Make or break.

En français : ça passe ou ça casse, quitte ou double 

Exemple : when an interviewer asks you this tricky question it’s really make or break depending on what you answer. 

10. Take it or leave it

En français : à prendre ou à laisser 

Exemple. 10 bucks. That’s the deal: take it or leave it.

11. By and large

Synonyme : Mostly, generally; with few exceptions
En français :  dans l’ensemble, globalement, de manière générale 

Example. It was, by and large, a good presentation.

12. Peace and quiet

Synonyme:  A period of calm, silence (especially after noise, stress) 
En français : calme, tranquillité 

Example. Why don’t you all go and play outside? I need a bit of peace and quiet.

13. Anything and everything 

En français : tout et rien 

Exemple : my friend often comes over to my house, we just chat about anything and everything. 

14. Safe and sound

Synonyme : Safe from danger and free from injury or harm
En français : sain et sauf 

Exemple. I won’t be able to relax after this storm until I know that everyone is safe and sound.

Les expressions simples Niveau avancé 

15. Give or take

Synonyme : Approximately; plus or minus some unknown amount.
En français : plus ou moins 

Exemple. He was six feet tall, give or take.

16. Sick and tired

Synonyme : Annoyed or frustrated with something or someone.
En français : ras la casquette 

Example. I’m so sick and tired of living in this freezing cold house. 

17. Short and sweet

Synonyme : Efficiently brief in duration, (especially when referring to an unpleasant task) 
En français : bref et concis 

Example : The staff meeting was short and sweet today.

18. Neat and tidy

Synonyme : In a state of good order; tidy.
En français : bien rangé, en ordre 

Exemple. It feels so good when the house is neat and tidy.

19. Ups and downs

Définition: Periods of positive and negative events, moods, or interactions; highs and lows.
En français : des hauts des bas

Exemple. Heidi and Mike have their ups and downs, but they are still in love with eachother.

20. Spick and span

Définition : Clean, spotless; original sense “like new”.

Exemple. I mopped up the kitchen floor now it is spick-and-span.
